The Sound of the Day for January 4, 2006 is a hook and loop fastener strip being opened and closed. The brand name for this technology that most people will recognize is Velcro (which is a registered trademark). The inventor, Georges De Mestral named his invention "VELCRO" after the French words velours, meaning 'velvet', and crochet, meaning 'hook'.

For more info about hook and look fasteners, check out the Wikipedia page on Velcro.
