The Sound of the Day for September 1, 2006 is a bass guitar with no frets (i.e. fretless). This just means that the small pieces of metal that would otherwise separate notes on the instrument are not present. This allows the player to produce tones of any frequency without segmenting them into individual notes. This produces the sliding up and down quality you hear in this Sound.
