It sounds like a large sheet of stainless steel, mounted on balloon resonators, struck with a medium density marimba mallet.

That's exactly right!... except for the stainless steel, balloon resonators and the mallet. ;)
The Sound of the Day for August 4, 2005 is a Medium-sized China crash symbol. It was being held and tapped by human hands.
We gotta get some of those balloon resonators.
